The word Pug is from a Latin root meaning "clenched fist." That description fits the pug's appearance very good. Pugs are short and very stocky, muscular, have a wide chest, straight, very strong front legs and well-muscled hind legs. Their personality includes perky, affectionate, playful, clever and a bit on the mischievous and willful side. While communicating with humans they make a grunting nasal noise, similar to that of a pig.

One of the major identifiable features of a Pug is its curly tail. The pug's tail is set up high on the back, and is curled tightly. The double curled tail (two complete loops) is the ideal tail that breeders strive for, but a single tight loop or twist is very acceptable. It is uncharacteristic of the pug breed to have a loose, limp tail that bounces over the Pugs back, or a Pug who carries its tail uncurled.

Pugs were a popular pet for Tibetan monks and were imported to Holland by the Dutch East Indies Trading company which introduced them to all of Europe and eventually to the Americas. In addition to their extreme popularity as pets, Pugs served as guard dogs, scent hounds, and fashionable coach footmen. Pugs have done just about everything. They were finally recognized by the American Kennel Club or AKC in 1885. Some famous Pugs that played on TV and the movies include ‘Frank’ from ‘Men in Black’ and ‘Odie the Talking Dog’ from David Letterman, who could say "I love you" to its owner.
